It is inevitable that we all know someone close to us that has been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Our hope is that your special someone is still beating this horrible disease.  I, myself, have lost a couple of amazing women in my life to breast cancer. During the month of October, take the time to remember the ones that have fought the fight and continue fighting to find a cure.

Here are a few stats from this year. It is calculated that in American women, there will be approximately 232,340 new cases of breast cancer and 39,620 deaths. In American men, there will be approximately 2,240 new cases and 410 deaths.

General risk factors:

• Being female 

• Getting older

• Family history 

Breast cancer rates in women under 40 is low, but the highest rates are in women over the age of 70. Approximately 95% of the women diagnosed are over the age of 40. Family history of breast cancer also increases your risk. Living a healthy lifestyle could quite possibly reduce your risk or recurrence of breast cancer. Please get screened, a simple mammography or MRI can find early stages.

Happy Nurses Week!!!

Celebrated annually from May 6th - May 12th, National Nurses Week gives us the opportunity to recognize the nurses that take care of us and show our appreciation to them.

"National Nurse Week" was first observed in 1954, based on a bill introduced in Congress by Rep. Frances Payne Bolton of Ohio, an advocate for nursing and public health.  The year marked the 100th anniversary of nursing profession pioneer Florence Nightingale's mission to treat wounded soldiers during the Crimean War.  But it was not until 1974 that the White House and President Nixon proclaimed that National Nurses Week be celebrated.  We are glad that President Nixon helped declare a week to recognize all of your hard work.

If it weren't for nurses, who would be there in the middle of the night to check our vitals and make sure we are okay?  Thank you for your patience, dedication, commitment, passion, and nurture.  Whether you are a trauma nurse, cardiac nurse, CNA, LPN, or RN or in nursing school; YOU are greatly appreciated.

World Autism Awareness Day

Today is the 6th Annual World Autism Awareness Day! 

Did you know that National Autism Awareness Month has been celebrated since the 1970s?   Did you also know that every 11 minutes a family gets the news their child has autism? 

   

April is recognized every year in the US as a chance to connect with neighborhoods and communities to inform and educate the public about the affects of autism. For more information on autism or ways to get involved, please visit the Autism Society or Autism Speaks.  

Here are some interesting facts:
• Autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the US
• On average, Autism costs a family $60,000 a year
• Autism affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys
• There is no medical detection or cure for Autism
• Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding

The most distinguishing symbol of Autism Awareness is the puzzle ribbon.  We are honored to carry this logo to embroider on your scrub tops.

National Donor Day

In the US, there are over 100 million people registered to be an organ donor, one organ donor can save up to 8 lives! Isn't that amazing? So many people can receive the gift of life from just a few of us being willing to donate.

With the support of the US Department of Health and Human Services, National Donor Day was started in 1998 by the Satum Corporation and its United Auto Workers partners.

There are names being added to the donor waiting list while you are reading this blog; approximately every 10 minutes someone is added. On average, 79% of people receive organ transplants each day. Although, about 18 people pass away each day waiting for transplants because of the shortage of donated organs.

As of May 2009, the percentage of beneficiaries who were still alive 5 years post-transplant are as follows for the heart, liver, kidney, and lung.
- Heart: 74.9%
- Liver: 73.8%
- Kidney: 69.3%
- Lung: 54.4%

February is American Heart Month!

Did you know?

By making a few good choices, you can avoid being diagnosed or reduce your risk ! To start with, eat better and make substitutions where you can. Get active, take a walk with the family. Manage your blood pressure, stop smoking, reduce blood sugar, control your cholesterol, and either lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Just small changes can make a huge difference.
