National Safety Month: Week 1

Each June, National Safety Month is recognized. It's a yearly observance that focuses on enlightening and encouraging safe behaviors around the leading causes of injuries and deaths that can easily be avoided.

This year, they focus on the need to practice safe behaviors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as three times as many employees are injured off the job than while at work. The theme for week one is Employee Wellness.

You'd be surprised at what big difference a small change makes on your health. At least 80% of all stroke, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes, and over 1/3 of cancers, could possibly be avoided if we simply made the choice to eat better, be more active, reduce the use of alcohol, and quit smoking, according to the WHO (World Health Organization).

Here are a few tips to promote employee wellness:
Fruits and vegetables - fill 1/2 your plate with these.
Take a brisk walk during your lunch hour or break.
Drink water instead of soda or coffee.
Go for a bike ride after work with the family, make it fun!
Choose lean protein – seafood, turkey and chicken breast, eggs and beans.
Join a sports league with a friend or co-worker.
Go to the gym.
