National Safety Month: Week 3

Prevent Falls

• Secure electrical cords
• Be sure to have good lighting
• Clean up spills quickly
• Keep floors and stairs clear
• Wear proper shoes

More than 8.7 million emergency room visits each year are due to slips, trips, and falls. Most times, falls are preventable. There are many risk factors, some include age-related issues, health problems, and environmental hazards.

Older adults should stay active, remove tripping hazards, review medication, and have vision checked to help prevent the risk of falling. One in three adults age 65 and older falls each year (CDC).

National Safety Month: Week 2

Work Ergonomically

Overexertion is the 3rd leading cause of accidental injuries. Ergonomic problems are disorders of the soft tissues that are caused by overexertion while lifting or pushing, repetitive motions, sitting or standing too long in one position, and using excessive force.

Know the signs:
• Tingling
• Swelling
• Pain
• Tenderness
• Numbness
• Loss of grip strength
• Clicking

Ergonomic conditions can occur from all type of activities such as using heavy equipment, typing on a keyboard (like I'm doing right now), helping a friend move, or playing video games.
Know the right tool to use to get the job done and know how to use it properly. If you don't know how to, get trained on the proper technique. This is crucial to preventing injuries. We don't want you to get hurt at work, or anywhere for that matter.

So, please, be careful!

National Safety Month: Week 1

Each June, National Safety Month is recognized. It's a yearly observance that focuses on enlightening and encouraging safe behaviors around the leading causes of injuries and deaths that can easily be avoided.

This year, they focus on the need to practice safe behaviors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as three times as many employees are injured off the job than while at work. The theme for week one is Employee Wellness.

You'd be surprised at what big difference a small change makes on your health. At least 80% of all stroke, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes, and over 1/3 of cancers, could possibly be avoided if we simply made the choice to eat better, be more active, reduce the use of alcohol, and quit smoking, according to the WHO (World Health Organization).

Here are a few tips to promote employee wellness:
Fruits and vegetables - fill 1/2 your plate with these.
Take a brisk walk during your lunch hour or break.
Drink water instead of soda or coffee.
Go for a bike ride after work with the family, make it fun!
Choose lean protein – seafood, turkey and chicken breast, eggs and beans.
Join a sports league with a friend or co-worker.
Go to the gym.

Join us in taking a step toward a more healthy and active lifestyle!

National Women's Health Week - It's Your Time

Are you taking the necessary steps to make your health a priority?
Believe me, I know it's hard to think about your own health when you are thinking about your job, children, spouses, and what you need to pick up from the grocery store for dinner. This week is to remind you that your health is just as important, if not more, than all of those other things you have going on. A lot of times women put the needs of their families first, it's natural for us to care for everyone else and then ourselves second. In doing that, sometimes our health and well-being suffers.

We encourage you to do a couple of things that lower your possibility of certain diseases and enhance your mental and physical health. Here are some examples of what you can do, make sure you're getting enough sleep, manage your stress, be active, have regular checkups with your physician, and eat healthy.  Remember, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." If you are already doing these things, great! Keep up the good work!

Today is also National Women's Checkup Day, you can take the pledge to visit your physician for a check up at http://www.womenshealth.gov/whw/check-up-day/.
If you would just like more information on National Women's Health Week or Checkup Day you can go to http://www.womenshealth.gov/whw.

Happy Birthday Florence Nightingale!

The "Lady with the Lamp" will always be remembered for leading nurses in the care of thousands of wounded soldiers in the Crimean War.  Florence was born in Italy on May 12, 1820, though her family opposed her desire to devote her life to nursing, she did it anyway. She campaigned for sanitation and better health care for everyone. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was said that Florence reduced the death rate from 42% to 2% by making improvements in hygiene and sanitation.

Florence Nightingale
May 12, 1820 - August 13, 1910

Florence's most tremendous accomplishment was making nursing a respectable profession for women. Florence published over 200 books, reports and pamphlets.  To this day, her books and other writings continue to be an asset for nurses and health professionals.  She died at the age of 90 and was one of the most famous and instrumental women of the 19th century.

Today we remember the Pioneer of modern nursing and the Lady with the Lamp.
Happy Birthday, tomorrow, Florence!

National Nurses Week

Celebrated annually from May 6th - May 12th, National Nurses Week gives us the opportunity to recognize the nurses that take care of us and show our appreciation to them.

"National Nurse Week" was first observed in 1954, based on a bill introduced in Congress by Rep. Frances Payne Bolton of Ohio, an advocate for nursing and public health.  The year marked the 100th anniversary of nursing profession pioneer Florence Nightingale's mission to treat wounded soldiers during the Crimean War.  But it was not until 1974 that the White House and President Nixon proclaimed that National Nurses Week be celebrated.  We are glad that President Nixon helped declare a week to recognize all of your hard work.

If it weren't for nurses, who would be there in the middle of the night to check our vitals and make sure we are okay?  Thank you for your patience, dedication, commitment, passion, and nurture.  Whether you are a trauma nurse, cardiac nurse, CNA, LPN, or RN or in nursing school; YOU are greatly appreciated.

That's it! You're finished! Here are a couple of reviews for our favorite fashion pant, the Ladies 6 Pocket Scrub Pant - Style # 14276.

Still comfortable after a 12 hour shift!
Finally--a good quality pair of scrub pants for an affordable price! I have a very slim build and every other pair of scrub pants that I have tried need adjusting every so often throughout the day. Not these! These stay in place no matter how hectic the day gets. I've worn mine for a few months now and the color has not faded, the material is not worn. (I work at a wildlife rehabilitation center full time, 40-50 hours a week). Really can't say enough good things about these pants!

Finally a pant that fits as good as it looks!
This pant fits great. I love all the fashion stitching, especially the knee pleats. All the fashion of Koi without the hefty price. My only observation is, I'm 5'4"ish and the regular is a tad long, so I ordered the petite for my next color and they fit perfect!
